I'm the sole user for that product, but of course, the requirements and the design comes from other teams. And then I carry out the simulation. So I carry out the task with Star-CCM+ and then I give my verdict to those teams, along with any suggestions to improve our technology and products.
  • Meshing, for instance, it's very easy to mesh, try different approaches to meshing. Traditionally that's a very difficult job, but in STAR-CCM+ it makes it very easy and very reliable. Post-processing also is very nice and in all the modeling, the physics that you can carry out and you can simulate is also very, very nice. I tried to move to the priorities that does a good job. All in all, it's a very good software.
  • Maybe a little bit on the automation side and if you want to script something, if you want to automate procedures, that happens through every simulation round that you have. That part could be a little bit cumbersome right now, depending on the operating system that you use.
  • Introducing the software on other platforms like Mac OSS.
The applications that I have been using it with in terms of flow and energy and temperature distributions and coupled solvers, segregated solvers, these kind of areas if you need that, those kind of solvers, it's very good. It's very robust. Maybe on the combustion side, it could improve, especially if you have these kind of tabulated solvers that you want to use, not the detailed chemistry, then it becomes very difficult to get some results from it. And do you trust the results or not? That's always the question on that kind of application, something that I could think of really fast.
  • I can't think of anything but positive of course. I mean, we've been improving our products, we've been using this to test less to make sure that our products will meet the requirements and meet the objectives that we have. And I've never seen a case where it has been proven otherwise. So yeah, it's been great for us.

All flow simulations that are relevant for topics that might have direct impact on product performance. So optical column conditioning, outgassing and deposition rates, defectivity, Optics Life time, Thermal and pressure stability.
  • Multiphase Flow
  • Meshing capabilities for industrial problems
  • CAD import from NX
  • User Interface
  • Postprocessing & visualization
  • Implementing physics like Cox-Voinov model
  • Mesh related stability issues
  • Chemical & plasma physics
  • Integration with other products from Siemens (similar level as we have with Abacus)
  • Speed up the lagrangian solver
  • Improved guidence on uFluidics & evaporation models
  • Interoperability (HEEDS, AMEsim, System Modelling Workbench but also with non siemens products and open source codes required for LBM, DSMC, PIC, DFT...
We still are not able to do without other sw. There are plenty of use cases that we are more or less forced to allow people to use sw from the competition. Training needs to be updated. e.g. the meshing course is outdated and should contain all aspects like AMR, Overset, Boundary layer, quiality checks and service repair (preferably send back to TC if there already not good). Help documentation needs to be updated with LL and current state of the art (including best practices evaporation, chemical librarry, new meshing strategies, boundary slip etc etc.) Using STAR-NX (guidence on where best to do what related to CAD NX vs STAR). Making use of Amesim HEEDS in order to do ROM.
  • Setting up from scratch and the ability to use certain .sim as golden reference set's is helping a lot (related to process automation)
  • AMR and overset are powerfull for industrial application
Our designated support engineers do a proper job.
On the outdated Help file and training material there is a lot to gain

I use it to model two-phase fluid heat transfer with high fidelity modeling of nucleate boiling and related phenomena. It's in parallel or complete replacement to experimental testing that is difficult or not feasible to implement in a lab setting.
  • Variety of fluid physics models.
  • Amount of documentation and references gives a good starting point.
  • Fast and intuitive interface.
  • More generalized automation functions, some features are incompatible with scripting.
  • More state of the art numerical methods available.
  • Examples and documentation on created generalized user code to access back-end data.
For any single-phase flow problem, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ kills it, but for some hypersonic applications, you'd be better off with a specialized or in-house code. For multiphase modeling it has maybe 80% of models that exist, a few major recent innovations are lacking support (interface reconstruction methods for example) but Simcenter STAR-CCM+ does offer a variety of approaches that are popular in literature.
  • Time saved in creating a inhouse code, tens and tens of hours.
  • Time saved in experimental setup, tens of hours.
  • Does add some time in testing to confirm star is doing what you think it's doing, but an overall net gain in productivity.

Those old guys of CD-adapco knew me by name. I have been using it for more than a decade and I was like the branding police when people fail to name it properly (StarCCM+, star-CCM, etc). I have used it for a wide variety of problems in the majority of my CFD career. I had a love & hate relationship with this code as it messed up my career after having a glorious career for a decade.
  • If you get your knobs well in the case setup, It is reasonably accurate to compare with any test data.
  • It is good for repetitive workflows where you can greatly benefit from automation in the code.
  • Single Integrated Platform can save your ass to move back and forth between multiple codes.
  • Coupled solver is a whole mess with a whole lot of bandwagon of tuning parameters to get what you are looking for.
  • The way AMR is implemented seems to be too complicated. Make it simple.
  • For Buddha's sake, implement a Frequency based solver.
It is a general-purpose CFD software and not a special-purpose CFD software.
  • Witnessed the shortened cycles for setting up simulations at the user's place where I have supported.
